Suburban League gold as Bilbao bandwagon rolls on

BRISTOL Bilbao goal ace Cory Clark is targeting even bigger and better things for his team after helping his Bristol and Suburban League fliers race to the first division summit.

These are heady days for the Dundridge Farm Playing Fields outfit from St George, who swept aside all before them last season to take the Division Three title with a 100 per cent record, while clinching the GFA Intermediate trophy for good measure.

That good form saw them elevated two divisions, but their sparkling form under Ben Lewis’ leadership has continued unabated as three wins out of three has propelled them to top spot, with 16 goals bagged already and just one conceded ahead of this Saturday’s home match with Bristol Telephones Reserves.

They have also issued a severe warning of intent about their capabilities in this season’s GFA Junior Cup competition, winning their first game last weekend 7-0 at the expense of St Pancras.

Club secretary at only 26, Clark, enthused to GFA News: “It’s a really happy place to be at the moment; we couldn’t have asked for a better start. Ben has been with us for more than a year and he’s not lost a competitive league game since he’s been in charge.

“I’ve managed to get a couple of goals in two games while Nathan Stokes is leading the way with six from four games so far.
â€œThe great thing is we’re a close group of friends who have that winning mentality and are determined to keep going and try and get into the Suburban Premier Division. In fact we’re looking to introduce a reserve team next season because of the interest, which can only improve the squad still more.”

Far from resting on their laurels, Bilbao strengthened their ranks ahead of the 2014-15 start by enlisting the services of goalkeeper Jay Powell, full-back Jack Kelly, from Easton Cowboys, and former Soundwell Victoria forward George Hadjikoumi, all of whom have added “quality” to the team, according to former Fry Club and Keynsham Town marksman Clark.
